We have more movement outside. The cosmos seeds we planted 8 days ago sprouted. These were from a packet 7 years old–so much for people who say that seeds won’t grow after a year or so. And they went in on a 53-degree day! I did make a booboo in regards to them, but am not going to fess up to the details yet. You never know, all might turn out well and I won’t have to.
That’s not the only new growth today. The dianthus (baby doll mixed colors) we bought a week ago are already up too, and they went in on a 90 degree day. The packet says 8 to 10 days for germination, these came up 6 days after going into the flower bed.
Time to dig out the calculator: The average high temp for the 8-day period between seeding and sprouting for the cosmos was 76 degrees, the average low was 51, and the median temp was 63.
The average high temp for the 6-day period between seeding and sprouting for the dianthus was 82(!) degrees, the average low was 56, and the median temp was 69 degrees.
Will they survive the upcoming storms we have in the forecast?
An anxious audience is pulling for the wee seedlings!
Oh, I bet you planted the cosmos NOT toward the back. They can get pretty darn big, but they are nice and airy so they might be all right. Yay for old seeds!
Ah, you know your stuff!
I made the same “mistake” once, but it didn’t bother me at all. Like I said they are airy and other plants around them were not hidden, so all is well in the garden! 😀
